Macintosh Application Environment (MAE) 1.0 Overview
Macintosh Application Environment™ (MAE)—the virtual Macintosh for open systems—is an innovative software product for users of RISC-based UNIX workstations. A complete Macintosh environment in an X Window, MAE brings the functionality and ease-of-use of the Macintosh computer to Sun Microsystems SPARCstations running the SunSoft Solaris operating system, as well as Hewlett-Packard 9000 Series 700 workstations running HP-UX.
As Apple's first cross-platform software product for open systems, MAE is specifically designed to bring the power of the Macintosh to non-Apple computers. With MAE installed, workstation users can easily run unmodified 680x0-based Macintosh productivity applications, including popular spreadsheet, desktop publishing, word-processing, graphics, and business applications. What’s more, MAE allows users to navigate their UNIX file systems, use system services—such as PostScript printers on the UNIX network—open UNIX files and access UNIX applications through the Macintosh graphical interface.
MAE seamlessly integrates Macintosh features into the UNIX environment. For
example, the Macintosh desktop and the Macintosh Finder are built in to MAE,
providing the same look and feel as a Macintosh computer. Furthermore, MAE
provides the productivity tools, ease of use, and functionality of a Macintosh computer within the X Window.
As a virtual Macintosh in an X Window, the Macintosh Application Environment offers the benefits of a Macintosh environment, while at the same time taking advantage of the speed and power of a RISC-based UNIX workstation.
Features

• Provides the Macintosh graphical user interface and Desktop Manager in an X Window
• Includes the Macintosh System 7.1 Finder, bringing to the UNIX file system the same file-handling and navigation functionality as a Macintosh
• Provides many of the new features of the Macintosh System 7.1 Operating System, including the ability to use aliases and to use “publish-and-subscribe” data-sharing
• Allows users to cut and paste data between applications
• Lets the user resize the Macintosh X Window to any size desired
Runs Macintosh applications
• Lets users run popular off-the-shelf Macintosh System 7 software applications
• Reads Macintosh high-density floppy disks and CD-ROMs
• Allows users to start a Macintosh or UNIX application—or to open a file—by double-clicking an icon
Integrates smoothly with UNIX
• Provides an easy to use Macintosh interface to navigate local and network UNIX file systems
• Allows users to gain access to UNIX resources and services from within the MAE X Window
• Lets users move and copy files from one directory or folder to another by clicking and dragging a file's icon
• Prints UNIX and Macintosh files on printers that support PostScript(TM), using the Apple Chooser and the Print command
Enhances networking
• Takes advantage of NFS (Network File System) from Sun Microsystems, allowing file sharing and file services across the network
• Displays and allows manipulation of remote as well as local Macintosh and UNIX files and applications
• Integrates the UNIX file system and NFS mounted file systems with the Macintosh File Manager, so users can rely on standard UNIX communications functions and procedures
